These clips are taken from the film Yo, la peor de todas, directed by the late Argentine film-maker María Luisa Bemberg in 1990, about the life of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (based on Octavio Paz's book Sor Juana, o, las trampas de la fe).
The clips have been compacted
as much as possible in order to avoid excessive download times -- the video
motion is jerky but enough to give you some flavour of the film, which
you can watch in the Language Laboratory.

This clip is from the beginning of the film, in which we see the new Viceroy and Vicereine attending a performance of a play by Sor Juana in the Convent. Sor Juana's reputation has preceded her, and the Viceroy enthusiastically tries to remember a famous poem of hers which gently mocks men for their hypocrisy towards women ("Hombres necios que acusáis a las mujeres sin razón"). Note the archbishop, who is shocked by such frivolity, and declares at the end, "This is not a convent, it's a brothel (lupanar)". |
